Point of Order

The town hall debate, Obama vs. McCain

Mary Jenkins, with a question for Senator Obama. Sir, your campaign is saying that when you worked with William Ayers on the so-called “educational reform” projects in Chicago, you didn’t know that Ayers and his wife, Bernadine Dohrn, had been members of the Weathermen. Is that true?

Obama: Er, well, I think I had heard about the Weathermen, but I thought they were just a garage band, I swear!

Mary: Even though Bernadine Dohrn was, at one time, one of the most wanted terrorists in the U.S.?

Obama: Listen, that’s a very common name, like Smith or Jones; it just never occurred to me that it could be the same person.

Mary: One follow-up question, Senator. Reverend Jeremiah Wright spewed racism and anti-semitism from his pulpit for decades. You were a member of his church for many years. Was it a coincidence that you didn’t disavow him until the Democratic primaries earlier this year?

Obama: Look…heh…you know how it is. You stay up late on Saturday night, and you go to church Sunday morning and it’s kind of hard to stay awake. The truth is, I slept through his sermons – er, for twenty years. Mr. Moderator, can I have a glass of water? Next question, please.

Bob Larsen, Senator Obama. Now, about Tony Rezko…

Obama (spewing water all over the podium): *Cough! Cough!* Oh! Look over there! Isn’t that a discolored mole on John McCain’s chin?
