When Paving the Road to Hell, If You're Out of Good Intentions, You May Substitute Vain Pretentions

Stacy McCain disembowels David Brooks with a tent-peg this week, and justly so, as Babbling Brooks stubbornly continues his practice of name-checking various important historical figures in the absurd hope that his own inane observations will acquire some of the luster of their distinguished company. McCain closes by asking the (surely rhetorical) question, "Am I the only one who believes that the entire purpose of this 804-word column was to deliver that one cheap shot at Sarah Palin?"

No, part 2 of the intent was: "But it’s not right to end on a note of cultural pessimism because there is the fact of President Obama."

Followed with: "Whatever policy differences people may have with him, we can all agree that he exemplifies reticence, dispassion and the other traits associated with dignity. The cultural effects of his presidency are not yet clear, but they may surpass his policy impact. He may revitalize the concept of dignity for a new generation and embody a new set of rules for self-mastery."

Now you may puke ...

Cheers

The NYT advertises David Brooks as the voice of conservatism for the paper. I could never understand that, same as for whathisname (the Sullivan guy who destroyed his reputation with his crazy guy blog entries about Palin).

I consider him more a moderate. Bill Kristol is more a conservative. How do I know? Because the NYT got rid of him as a columnist.
