You know, we've paid $40 per year for the library card to the Duval county library system (our county library books number in the tens). I racked up some fairly significant library overdue charges for 20 books at a time because sometimes I was just too busy to make the trip.
Since SwampMan got his Kindle, we haven't been visiting the library. (I've long since had one.) I asked him if he realized that our library card expired over 2 months ago. He hadn't. "I don't really think we should renew" he said. "The Kindle book price is less expensive than a tank of gas to go to the library."
Plus we avoid having to hire an attorney to represent us at the trial if we forget to turn a book in.
Libraries may well become a thing of the past. I can't remember the last time I set foot in our local library, and it's within walking distance. Part of the reason, though, is that it's easier to get books for my Kindle, and I have the internet for everything else, and also because our library is small and doesn't have that big a selection of books.

I used to love libraries when I was a kid. That was before Amazon and ABE.
