No sooner do I move to North Carolina...

...than I find that these things are running amok: "Coyote Attacks Young Girl Outside of Her House".

Truth to tell, there have been a significant number of incidents reported in Virginia, too. Coyotes are like cockroaches: they can survive practically anything, and thrive practically anywhere.

Coyotes were always a problem in the West, but as more and more of us moved west, more and more of them adapted and moved east. Now coyotes are becoming a problem here in Ohio, particularly the hybrid coy-dogs. Evolution in action.

Around here, they're the target of gangs of deplorables in their big 4 wheel drive trucks, armed with high powered rifles and cell phones; tracking the mangy things until one of them can get a good shot at it. I've never joined them, due to lack of interest, but they've been doing it for a long time so I assume they must be successful at it or they would stop doing it.

I see one from time to time, going across my yard, and 'mangy' is a good description. They just look...well, untrustworthy.

Locally, the increase in the coyote population lead to a decrease in the feral cat population.

So that's one silver lining. A small one, to be sure. Otherwise, yep, they are pests.
